Avigliano Umbro, born in 1975, is one of the youngest italian municipalities, and even if its historical centre was destroyed and sacked more than once, it has a old history full of important events. During medieval period and in the following centuries, it was an important border castle, desired by Todi, that, in 1220 was able to wrench it from Baschi family. A control that Avigliano couldn't accept and for this reason ther was another rebellion. In 1237 Todi regained the castle and destroyed it: a so dull punishment that Pope Gregorio IX sent a strict Monitory. Distruction and death were also carried, after this, by the mercenary army lead by John Hawkvood, mostly know nowadays as Giovanni Acuto, who at that time was at cardinal Albornoz comand.

Refortified in 1419, the castle was razed to the ground by Chiaravalle family in 1500 during Acquasparta's siege. Not a lot of things survived to the large number of sackings and distructions that the history had reserved to Avigliano. Remember to visit The "Old Door" decorated with armorial bearing of Todi's eagle, the Comunal Theatre built in liberty style, tiny but attractive, Sant'Egidio and Sant' Angelo Church, placed inside the graveyard and made precious with a lot of excellent workmannship paintings.

The fortress of Sismano Castle, during medieval conflicts, has always played an important role, and this is the reason why nowadays still has a strong historical value.
In the surroundings of this district, not only the castle, but also is important the Church dedicated to Saint Andrea Corsini, that hold two important works of the XVII century, made by Polinori (picture of S.Andrea Corsini) and by Palmiro Avi (Madonna del Rosario).
"Fireplaces" in old days were indicating the breadth and the importance of the city center. The census used fireplaces to cens people. Historical documents report that Sismano had 62 fires, Avigliano Umbro 76, and Civitella Moglie Mala 97, so this was the more powerful. Still now these fires can be seen from the close Arnata river.
